Hotel Zaza Critique

Team Members: Steve Elliott, Peter Oliveto, Melissa Sly

Link: http://www.hotelzaza.com/#index

Suggestions:

1. Logo

-needs either needs to stand out more, or have some kind of background to keep it from blending in with the background photos

2. Booking mask

- reamins inconsistent from page to page, i.e. Here the booking mask link is on the left side of the page, while here the booking mask is on the right side of the screen

3. Calendar Events

- need to rethink how they portray calendar events. The small window that appears has slow response time / confusing delay.

- their full “calendar events” page seems entirely too repetitive on this page

4. Page Transition

- When clicking links to new pages, an informative paragraph slides in, and then 1-2 seconds later the photo changes. Yet, there are some pages where this functionality isn’t present. Too much inconsistency makes things uncomfortable.

5. Photo Gallery

- it takes some searching to find a photo gallery. Not easily apparent. Organization of their gallery needs to be cleaned up. i.e Here we see that the bottom of their gallery is too jagged . The red background texture should be reconsidered.

- When resizing the window in their gallery it looks choppy and glitchy. Possibly incoporate functionality from the “Isotope” assignment for their gallery.

6. Full Screen from  Photo Gallery

- when clicking the “Full Screen” button on the photo gallery screen here, the logo with a square red texture stays consistent on each page, which doesn’t have too much of  a purpose.

Homework 11

Here is my Isotope

- still working on customizing everything, I think I’m gonna go with an entirely different template and work on getting the sorting function to work.

I chose to critique Isabel’s “Sea Game.” I thought this was a pretty cool game that keeps things simple but fun. I really like the second level, as the animation used was really interesting. The background works well with the colors of the actors as well, as nothing seems to blend in and all actors stand out from the background. One simple addition you could to make to the game would be to add a health bar, or some type of status bar. Or maybe add a score and have the score decrement by some interval every time the actor gets hit. Also, maybe try changing the paths and/or speed of the “lasers” as they fire out from the actors, as this would make them a little harder to predict. Overall I thought this was a really cool game that was simplistic, but set the foundation to something that could turn out to be an awesome game.

Homework 10

Here is my Scrollorama

Here is my revised website

Blog Post: I wanted to write this blog post about the SuperScrollorama homework. I thought this was definitely an awesome homework, but actually trying to manipulate anything became frustrating quickly. Perfect example: I added the ninja star whipping across the screen, and after 30 minutes of confusion, I realized because the image dimensions were slightly too large, it apparently shifted the next animation of text, which meant you couldn’t see anything. Replacing things, after sizing everything correctly, wasn’t bad at all. Of course I ran into some other small glitches, but managed to debug them rather quickly. I wish I knew more about jQuery/ JavaScript so I could go in and start manipulating the animations/parallaxes a bit, but every time I tried, nothing would work.

Favorite Website: www.newegg.com

Screenshot

I’d have to say that my favorite website is Newegg.com as I spend about half my day looking through all of the computer deals they have going on. I also really like the way they structure their website as they have links, filters, etc., to conform the site to provide very specific results. For those who don’t know, Newegg.com is basically the Amazon for computers, as they sell anything and everything that deals with computers and electronics. Below I have provided a screenshot of their homepage, giving an idea on their site layout. Dealing with E-commerce websites is something I am considering as a potential career in the future, and a lot can be learned from Newegg as their business is extremely successful and, like Amazon, is an online only market.

Homework 6

Here is my Sequence

Here is my Desktop

Because we didn’t do option 2, I wanted to write about future plans for my desktop. I plan to animate the writing on the note to make it look written. I think the tricky part of that animation is making it look like natural writing and not just text randomly appearing. I would also like to add some kind of writing sound effect as well. I also plan on animating either the Christmas tree or the candy cane in some way, although I have not come up with anything yet. I may also end up animating the icon on the iPhone in the background, using an animation that follows how windows appear/disappear on the iPhone.

Review on Blog Article:

I thought this was a very interesting article that opened my eyes in terms of how much an impact an audience has on one’s performance, whether it be writing a book, a blog, or a Wiki post. What sparked even more interest was my thoughts while I was reading this article, as I have often been eager to start a YouTube account and  make videos, but I’m a little intimidated knowing the world is my audience. I also thought the article was 100% accurate when explaining how people think a bit more critically, and carefully, when writing entries or blog posts that will be published online. It’s some what motivational knowing that we live in an age where the Internet has had such a positive impact on our society, and being able to grow up while such change is taking place has been quite an experience. The Internet basically lets us share our thoughts, creations, etc., and let virtually the entire world have access. According to the article, this will push people to hopefully do better work as their global audience can be the hardest critics of them all.

Interactive site link

The interactive website I chose can be found here. This site actually provides information regarding a business known as “2advanced” who are responsible for making professional interactive websites. Their website is actually quite interactive in itself as it has numerous pages with different interactions and animations present. As the site loads, the loading bar is even quite intriguing, and every page is filled with different and exciting animations. The graphics used in combination with the site animation present a visually appealing website that is quite unpredictable. The website’s design is able to keep their content clear and well presented, something some interactive sites struggle with, while incorporating movement within their content area. On one part of the site, the design team provides links to some of their more notable pieces of work. The Ford Mustang website they did for the 2010 Ford Mustang was incredible. The site in itself is quite interactive and allows the users to virtually sit in the car and move around the interior and exterior. The camera angles and movement patterns used during these interactions place emphasis on certain details that are present within the car, which make the user feel as though they are really sitting in the car itself.  Overall, this is a pretty cool interactive site that provides some really well thought out motion and graphic design, as well as keeping a clear and organized structure for their informational content.

1000 True Fans

After reading the article regarding 1000 True Fans, I feel as though having such true fans seems like a comfortable spot for an artist to be at in terms of popularity. Having 1000 true fans is what an artist needs to make a living, according to the article, but not make a fortune. Making a living vs making a fortune is what keeps many people humble and engaged in what they’re doing, whether it’s making music, painting, etc. I also like how the article highlights that you don’t need millions of fans to be considered a great artist. Instead, you need a sufficient amount of true fans, whether it’s 500, 1000, or 5,000. The true fans are the fans that every artist strives to gain.

I’ve never been one to put any of my work out there for others to view, critique, etc., therefore gaining any kind of true fans would be a little tough at this point. Assuming I had 1000 true fans today, I would be extremely motivated to keep putting out artwork for my fans.I honestly don’t know how I would react to such a fan base because I’ve never had any sort of experience to relate back to, regarding fans of any sort. Luckily, contacting these fans is much easier in today’s time that it was 10-20 years ago, thanks to digital social media. Using something like Facebook or Twitter seems like the ideal method to keep in touch with a number of 1000 true fans. With this fan base, I think I’d remain a humble artist and keep producing as much work as possible, keeping in mind that the true fans are what help me make my living.

Worth 1000 images

Image 1

I think this picture is awesome. Being born on Halloween, I’ve always been into demonic and dark imagery. I love the concept of taking something so simple and cute, like a small white bunny, and adding a demonic twist to the image. The photoshop work is great as it’s simple and clean.

Image 2

This image reminds me a lot of my childhood, which was spent playing in the woods behind my house. One of my favorite things to do in the summer was group up with some friends and catch snapping turtles. This picture does a great job emphasizing the point of snapping turtle teeth. Although they are not quite like this, when your hand goes anywhere near their mouth, this is the exact feeling and image that will immediately pop into your head, as once they bite your finger it’s quite a task getting it back.

Image 3

Being a dirt biker, this image really catches my attention. The way the artist took a simple image of a dirt bike and added a fiery explosion to the back end of the bike looks awesome. I also like the color chosen in this image as it’s darkened and really pushes out the colors of the flames.

Image 4

As my final image, it’s another fiery demon like picture. I’m also fascinated by fire and the way it moves throughout images. I love the way the fire morphs into a demon face, but it also has some magical effects mixed in. The photoshop done on this image is pretty wild and I think it does a great job capturing how the artist can really make some of these images come to life.
