extra blogs

1. For one week, you just said post an entry in the blog, so I will post an entry relating what I am doing right now to the world of graphic design. Right now, I am sitting with my roommates discussing the specifics of going out on the weekends. My roommates are what people would refer to as “bros,” while people people would call me a “hipster.” This means that my roommates dress up while they go out on the weekends, but I don’t. It could be argued, however, that I dress up all the time, because I care about that thing all the time, but my roommates only care when they are trying to get laid. This means that design only matters when you care about what others think, at least in the arena of visual appearance. Although this may be completely obvious, it matters, in that it implies that the ultimate purpose of design is to convince someone of something.

2. For my second blog post, I will talk about installation/performance. I often find myself laughing at performance art. I saw a lady who knitted out of her vagina for woman’s rights, and then a guy on Facebook posted about how she should be shot, to which some feminists from MICA argued with him for several hours. I saw this all after the fact and got a good laugh out of it, but it also provoked some thought in me, about the nature of people arguing on Facebook to prove a point, but also about feminism. I would like to think that the guy who posted the status also thought about feminism in a new light, but chances are he was really rooted in his stupid thoughts already. Performance art puts the artists up to a level of ridicule like no other, but it also can make some really strong points.

3. For my third blog post, I will return to my first blog post an work off of that. In order to convince someone of something, you need to want to convince someone of something. The whole point of graphic design is to convince people of things, so it takes people who have an inclination of convincing to do it. Art means self expression. Graphic design means the expression of others. But the classic art of the Renaissance is religious in nature, and was all commissioned by the church to convince people of the opinions of others. In this way, maybe graphic design can be real art. It’s a question I will face—art vs. graphic design, expression vs. bullshit. Time will tell.

Homework 1 redo

By |December 16th, 2013|assignment 1|0 Comments|

http://www.agentassociation.com/ This website looks very early internet. It could really use an update. Some things line up and others don’t. Everything’s too tight. Gotta get it redone, guys.

http://www.unitedtalent.com/ This website looks nice and sleek. Very hip. If I were a hip young artist, I would be attracted to this site. I like this site. Nice an minimal.

http://www.circletalentagency.com/ This website is pretty standard. They could use some drop down menus to not have such a cluttered homepage. As of now, it’s a little off-putting how much stuff is there. Overall, though, this is a nice site.

http://www.apa-agency.com/ This is a nice looking site. They keep the homepage simple and easy to navigate. It’s not as sleek as United, but it has its own look going for it, and that look is a good look.

-We don’t like the hounds tooth pattern

-More interactivity, such as a slideshow instead of just static images

-Better picture choice, for example, the cars in the picture below are bad

-People in the pics, looking like they’re partying. The hotel has a party vibe according to reviews, and the website doesn’t convey that

-Simplify homepage to only include Dallas/Houston buttons

-rewrite descriptions to convey sense of “VIP” experience

Homework 11

By |December 3rd, 2013|assignment 11|0 Comments|

It is very cold outside. When it’s this cold outside, it should probably start snowing pretty soon. If it doesn’t start snowing, there’s really no point in it being this cold out. I mean, seriously, snow’s at least fun. And I don’t have a car so I don’t have to worry about slippin’ n’ slidin’ around. Hopefully it’ll snow pretty soon. Then, I’ll get some hot chocolate and enjoy the winter. Until then, though, this cold is a no good down low dirty so and so.

My favorite website is reddit.com. I like reddit because it is a great way to kill time. Before I found reddit, I had to search all over the internet to efficiently kill time, but now I can do it with just one stop. Whenever I’m bored, I can go onto reddit and look at interesting and funny things. A good amount of the content is user generated, so there’s always new stuff to look at, and you can contribute too if you want to.  There’s nothing particularly special about the design of reddit, but it doesn’t get in the way, which is good. The design is simple, clean, and uncumbersome.

Homework 5

This is my sprite.

This is my parralax.

I have seen this happening in myself, in particular when it comes to art critiques for school and writing music in my free time. I find it difficult to create anything if I’ll be the only one viewing it. It almost seems pointless. When I have a critique on an art project, I’ll work extra hard on it because I know it will have an audience of critical eyes. I want to impress my peers and not embarrass myself. With music, I find myself at my most creative whenever I’m soon to play for a live audience. This has only happened a few times, but whenever I play a show I’ve found that I write good songs quickly. If I have no audience to look forward to I write much more mediocre songs slowly. Due to this, I definitely agree with what this article has to say.

This is a website that I particularly like. It is immediately immersive and beautifully illustrated in a creative and captivating way. It provides a new website experience for me and definitely holds my attention even after I’ve finished scrolling through. One moment of this site that stands out in particular is when you have to scroll the rowers across the screen. This is especially captivating because scrolling the mouse down moves the rowers across the screen instead of down the screen. This unexpected motion is fun and effective. The website is full of moments like these. It is also incredibly successful of getting across its simple message of congratulations to the British Olympic team for a successful games. The website is immersive, inspiring, and unlike any site I’ve ever been on before.

Homework 3

hotelHere is my hotel website design.

It would be amazing to be an artist with 1,000 true fans. I can imagine it, but I can’t really know what it feels like until it becomes true. I’ve thought about what it would be like to have my art really affect people before, and I think it would be a really incredible feeling. If I ever become an artist with 1,000 true fans, I will contact them however they contact me. The interaction with a true fan would probably be just as rewarding (if not more so) than creating the art itself.

Homework 2

This is a favorite submission of mine. It is a creative idea executed flawlessly with very impressive Photoshop skills. This is really an image that I admire. When I look at it I hope that someday I will be able to create such a realistic rendering in Photoshop. The reflective metal surfaces are especially impressive because of the warped image of the complicated ground pattern within them. The concept, too, is an exciting one. The thought of robotic creatures duking it out in a post apocalyptic wasteland really sparks the imagination.

This is another favorite of mine. I’m a huge sucker for both Star Wars and The Simpsons, so seeing such a well executed combination of the two is very satisfying. The image is a combination of cartoony and realistic Photoshop styles, which is appropriate. It’s clever the way Darth Vader’s mask is transformed into Homer’s teeth. Like the first image, I really admire the reflective surfaces on this Photoshop.

This is another excellent Photoshop. Once again, the reflective surfaces have suckered me into this image. The highlights on the ant create a convincing morning dew effect in their mimicry of the droplets on the surrounding leaves. Like the first image, this one really sparks the imagination. It’s fun to think of a world full of water ants, and maybe even water people.
